Did you know on average 70% of job openings aren't even posted online?
So if you're into a company you should definitely reach out to them to see if they have anything available that would be a mutually good fit for you and them. Even if they don't, by networking with the company you have shown interest and sparked a connection that will make you appear familiar when a job does open.
Familiarity = more likely to get an interview
RESEARCH THE COMPANY
First you need to make sure you understand what kind of company they are and what type of people they hire. Do they have a department or position that you would be a perfect fit for? Do you see an opportunity that is close to what you do but you could improve upon? Could they benefit from having someone like you and they don't already have that position?
Knowing how you would fit in is important as it helps build your case on why they should hire you.
INTRODUCE YOURSELF
Once you have a good understanding of the company and how you'd fit in, it's time to network via LinkedIn or email! If you have a connection at the company, that is who you first want to network with and email. If you don't have a connection at the company, then use LinkedIn to find a recruiter or someone in the department that you want to work in. Send them a message and let them know:
- why you love their company and want to work there
- what you can offer the company
- the position you would foresee yourself doing
WHAT YOU OFFER
When you are listing out things that you offer, make sure that it isn't fluff like: hard worker, self motivated, team player. You want to show them real value so that they feel like they should hire you. You can do that by being specific about your experience and accomplishments that are applicable. Here are some thought starters for those:
- what programs do you excel at?
- what do you have a lot of experience doing?
- how many years of experience do you have?
- what was an impressive project you've worked on?
If you have a good resume you should be able to pull some points from it. Make sure to use numbers and details that make you sound impressive and impactful.
STAY IN TOUCH
Keep in touch with them so you stay top of mind when a position does open. If they give you a timeframe of when to expect a position to be open, then be sure you contact them when that timing comes about. Otherwise sending them a note every few weeks "just checking in" will do just fine.
