If you follow me on instagram, then you know I am constantly preaching to never accept the first offer a new job makes you. By doing that you are leaving money on the table! Here is the best way to negotiate a salary in 2022.
1. KNOW YOUR WORTH
In order to negotiate the best salary, you should need to understand what the industry standard for the position you are applying for is. Having a good understanding of what you can make for a position gives you confidence and clout for negotiation. It most importantly sets realistic expectations of what to expect for the position. Not saying that you can't ask for more than that, but it might be harder to obtain if it's a lot higher than what is the going salary.
My favorite sites for salary research are Glassdoor.com and PayScale.com.
2. MAKE SURE IT'S THE RIGHT TIMING
Once an employer has made you an offer is the best time to negotiate a salary because in their minds they have already hired you so the ball is in your court. They aren't going to want to go through the interview process with someone else or take a different candidate - they want you! Wait until they have made an offer before you begin to negotiate.
So it's clear, you should still ask what the expected salary is for the position when you begin the interview process if it isn't listed. It's important to know your salary expectations are within the ballpark of what they are offering.
3. HAVE REASONING
We all want more money, of course. That unfortunately isn't good enough reasoning for negotiating the best salary though. You need to have something to back up your salary ask so it is seriously taken into consideration. Here are some great reasons that you deserve more than what they are offering - just make sure it's also the truth!
- level of effort for job is higher than you originally expected
- industry standard is paying more
- another company is offering you more money
- it's too lateral of a move compared to your current position
- you are bringing a lot of experience to the table
By following these steps you should be in a great position to negotiate the best salary in 2022. #newyearnewcareer
